Bumthang Valley

The best time to visit this area is March through May and early October into early November. The bird species that can be found in this area, which is comprised of farmers’ fields and a river basin: Ibisbill all year round and in spring and autumn migrants such as Pipits, Snipes and Black-billed Magpie.

Deothang to Samdrup Jonkhar
850 m to 250 m

This area is best visited between November and beginning of May. The following bird species can be found in this subtropical forest: Blue-eared Barbet, Blue-winged Laughingthrush, Blyth’s Kingfisher, Coral-billed Scimitar Babbler, Dark-rumped Swift, Greater Rufous-headed Parrotbill, Pale-headedd Woodpecker, Pied Falconet, Red-faced Liocichila, Rufous-bellied Eagle, Rufous-breastedd Bush Robin, Silver-breasted Broadbill, Violet Cuckoo, Ward’s Trogon, White-naped Yuhina, Wreathed Hornbill and the Yellow-vented Warbler.

Dochu-La
3115 m (east side along the pack-horse trail)

The best time to visit this area is during April - May. The following bird species can be found in this bamboo, fir, oak and rhododendron forests: Gold-naped Finch, Rufous-breasted Bush Robin, Satyr Tragopan and the Slender-billed Scimitar Babbler.

Dodena
2575 m (along the trail towards Shodu to the north)

The best time to visit this area is during April - May. The following bird species can be found in this oak forest: Golden-breasted Fulvetta, , Fire-capped Tit, Spotted Laughingthrush, Yellow-bellied Flowerpecker and the Maroon-backed Accentor during the winter months.

Gasa to Koina to Laya
2770 m to 3200 m to 3850 m

In order to reach this area, you must be willing to trek for two days. This cool broadleaved, mixed broadleaved and coniferous forests (fir, spruce and juniper) is home to the following bird species: Fire-tailed Myzornis, Fulvous Parrotbill, Goldnaped Finch, Purple Cochoa, Rufous-breasted Bush Robin, Satyr Tragopan, and the Yellowish-bellied Bush Warbler.

Mo Chu Valley
1300 m (5-6km North of Wangdue Phodrang)

The best time to visit this area is between November and the beginning of April. The Mo-chu valley is rich in water birds – mostly migratory.

Namling to Yongkala
2360 m to 1700 m

The best time to visit this area is between November and the beginning of May. This broadleaved forest is home to the such bird species as the Blue-fronted Robin, Broad-billed Warbler, Chestnut-breasted Partridge, Collared Treepie, Coral-billed Scimitar Babbler, Cutia, Golden Breasted Fulvetta, Greater Rufous-headed Parrotbill. Grey-sided Laughingthrush, Lesser Shortwing, Purple Cochoa, Rufous-breasted Bush Robin, Rufous-necked Hornbill, Rufous-throated Wren Babbler, Slender-billed Scimitar Babbler, Ward’s Trogon, White-gorgeted Flycatcher, White-naped Yuhina, Yellow-rumped Honeyguide, and the Yellow-throated Fulvetta.

Narphang La to Deothang
1700 m to 850 m (along forest road to Samdrup Jonkhar)

The best time to visit this area is between November and the beginning of May. The bird species that can be found in this warm broadleaf and subtropical forest: Beautiful Nuthatch, Gold-naped Finch, Grey-sided Laughingthrush, Rufous-necked Hornbill, White-gorgeted Flycatcher, White-tailed Yuhina, and the Yellow-throated Fulvetta.

Pele-La
3390 m (forest road by Pele-La)

This area is best to visit during April - May. The following bird species can be found in this mixed forest of bamboo, fir and rhododendron: Fire-tailed Myzornis, Great Parrotbill, Yellowish-bellied Bush Warbler and the Maroon-backed Accentor in the winter months.

Phobjikha Valley
3050m

The best time to visit this area is in May – June and later during October - March. Following bird species can be found in this area, which consists of marshes and potato fields: Black-necked Crane and the Japanese Quail.

Rimchu to Tashithang
1700m Mo Chu Valley North of Punakha

This area is best visited between November and beginning of May. The following bird species can be found in this warm broadleaf forest: White-bellied Heron, White-gorgeted Flycatcher, and the Yellow-vented Warbler.

Sengor to Namling
3050 m to 2360 m

The best time to visit this area is during April - May. The following bird species can be found in this area: Bar-winged Wren Babbler, Fire-tailed Myzornis and the Tragopan.

Tashithang to Damji
1700 m to 2430 m

This cool broadleaf forest is the home to the following bird species:

Black-tailed Crake, Brown Parrotbill, Grey-sided Laughingthrush, Golden-breastedd Fulvetta and the Slender-billed Scimitar Babbler.

Yongkala to Lingmethang
1700 m to 650 m

The best time to visit this area is between November and the beginning of May. Following bird species can be found in this warm broadleaf forest: Collared Treepie, Rufous-bellied Hawk Eagle, and the Yellow-vented Warbler.

Yutong La (3520m)
3520 m (Forest road over Yutong La)

The best time to visit this area is during April - May. The following bird species can be found in this mixed forest of bamboo, fir and rhododendron: Fire-tailed Myzornis, Great Parrotbill, Yellow-bellied Bush Warbler, and the Maroon-backed Accentor in winter months.
